Shipbuilding and Ship-repair Industry

Terms and Reference:

  1. To review the achievements and contributions of the shipbuilding and ship repair industries including Public Sector Enterprises during the Ninth Plan period (1997-2002).
  2. To review the role and relevance of shipbuilding and ship repair industry in die public sector in the context of liberalized economic scenario.
  3. To recommend policy measures to promote shipbuilding and ship repair sector to make it internationally competitive.
  4. To examine the possibility of conversion to joint ventures/privatization and suggest modalities to achieve this objective.
  5. To evaluate productivity and economics of the shipbuilding industry and suggest measures to improve upon the same through technological upgradation and R and D activities.
  6. To assess the present employment direct and indirect and the additional employment generated during 2002-07 and in the perspective of 15 years thereafter.
  7. To assess the present status of the use of information technology in the shipbuilding/ship-repair industry and suggest measures for integration of information technology, automation and networking for improving overall productivity and efficiency of the sector.
  8. To suggest areas of training and development and augmentation of the present institutional infrastructure, if required for making available skilled work force to the shipbuilding industry.

The working group may co-opt such official(s) or non-official(s) as member of the Group as considered necessary. The Working Group may also constitute sub-group(s) if so desired.

The expenditure on TA/DA of official members in connection with the meetings of the Group will be borne by the parent Department/Ministry to which the official belongs. Non-official members of the Group will be entitled to TA/DA as admissible to Grade-I officers of the Government of India and the same will be paid by the Planning Commission.

The working group will submit its report within six months.
