The social sector in India has been inundated with a variety of successful development initiatives by the state governments. These have showcased innovative approaches, effective strategies, long lasting impact and sustainability in reaching out to the most marginalized sections of population. One of the most critical requirements is, therefore, to codify and disseminate these approaches as widely and regularly as possible in order to encourage their replication in other parts of the country. With this objective, the Planning Commission, Government of India, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have published two compendiums of case studies, in 2002 http://planningcommission.gov.in/plans/stateplan/bpm-full-mnul.pdf and 2009 http://planningcommission.nic.in/plans/stateplan/ssphd/gprb.pdf of successful development initiatives by the state governments in various key fields like livelihoods, health, education, e-governance, women empowerment and child protection.
Considering the usefulness of the compendiums and their wide popularity as reliable reference material, it is necessary to document the recent case studies and disseminate them in the form of a Resource Book on Good Practices in Social Sector Service Delivery. The document would be aimed at understanding the emergence and operations of good practices, the conditions for their replicability and sustainability as well as extract lessons for the future. The themes covered would include, among others, livelihoods and skill development, health, education, food security, women and child development, environment, drinking water and sanitation, social security and energy.
For the preparation of the compendium, the Planning Commission has invited submission of good practices in social sector service delivery from all States and Union Territories in India. OneWorld Foundation India has been entrusted with the task of preparing the Resource Book on Good Practices in Social Sector
Service Delivery.
